One of my favorite client community board presidents likes to refer to herself as the "volunteer" president of her association. I always get a kick out of that. It is high time that HOA board members get the appreciation and respect they deserve. Now I know there are stories and urban legends about rogue boards running amok and squandering or stealing HOA funds, however in my experience this is a rarity and most board members are sincere hardworking people who care for their communities.
Being a board member in an HOA association is hard work and demands a skill set that includes getting along with people, being a good communicator, understanding facilitation and mediation and having thick skin.
As I alluded to before, the fourth government needs leaders that understand what it means to have a "fiduciary" responsibility. Board members, especially those who are officers in their associations have duties laid out in the Corporations Code, California Civil Code, their associations CCR's and Bylaws.
Bottom line - good boards, who work together with their professional managers, seek to fairly enforce their associations governing documents, budget for the ongoing operational and reserve needs of their community and manage risk ie. make sure their communities are adequately insured.
To all those board members out there - hats off and here's a standing "o"!
